November Reads & Reviews

november reads

The Maze Runner Files, James Dashner (2013)
This short companion to James Dashner’s popular Maze Runner series gives fans an extra insight into the Flare, WICKED and more. The first section ‘Confidential Files’ includes correspondence between WICKED employees as well as a transcript of an early conversation between Theresa & Thomas. Part two ‘Recovered Correspondence’ covers interesting information on the Flare and the final part ‘Suppressed Memories’ revisits some of the series’ most popular characters Thomas, Minho & Frypan.
A super quick and quite enjoyable read, my only complaint would be that there wasn’t enough of it! I would have loved to have seen this book doubled in length to include more ‘behind the scenes’ snippets and character insights like those in part three however after hearing about The Fever Code, a planned full length fifth book in the Maze Runner series, I'm looking forward to finding more answers there. ✯✯✯1/2

The Testing, Joelle Charbonneau (2013)
After the Seven Stages War the world is a very different place and the government needs the help of the next generation to rebuild it. Cia learns that she has been chosen to take part in the Testing, a process that determines which select few students go on to attend the prestigious University. Warned by her father to trust no one Cia must follow her instincts and make some huge decisions along the way.
This quick, well-paced read was full of interesting ideas that left me wondering where smart and likable protagonist Cia's jounrey will end. Although perhaps not my all-time favourite title in the YA dystopian genre I enjoyed The Testing a lot more than I had expected to and will definitely be picking up the sequels soon! ✯✯✯✯
