Based on the popular murder mystery board game, Clue (or Cluedo as well call it in the UK) this film tells the story of a group of strangers invited to a curious dinner party by an unknown host.
Each of the guests was sent an invitation including a pseudonym to protect their identities however the group quickly discover that they share something in common; the same man is blackmailing them all. When they are presented with weapons and the lights go out a murder is committed and the mystery begins. As the bodies start to pile up the guests must figure out which one of them is the killer.
Joining our familiar characters from the game - Miss Scarlet, Colonel Mustard, Mr. Green, Mrs. Peacock, Mrs. White & Professor Plum – are butler Wadsworth, maid Yvette and Mr. Boddy, Dr. Black’s US counterpart. There are a whole host of recognisable faces in this cast and their portrayals of this weird and wonderful bunch are spot on.
Clue is unique in that it does not only have one ending, but instead there are three. When the film was originally released, the cinemas each played a different version of the film some showing ending A, others B and the rest C. The DVD allows you to either watch the film with an ending chosen at random or to watch the full version with all three possibilities. I opted to watch all three and have to say really enjoyed them all.
Over the years this fun, fast-paced comedy has developed a cult following and it’s easy to see why. If comedy with a murder mystery twist is what you’re after this Halloween look no further than Clue.
