Week In Photos 55

First opportunity to wear the cropped Henry Holland tee I got for Christmas! / Garden in the sunshine / Mockingjay / Sunny days made me want to listen to Paramore / Goodies from the Waitrose free from section...I can confirm both are delicious! / Sawyer snoozing / Picked out some books from the shelf that I haven't gotten around to reading yet as part of my 2012 reading challenge target of 20 books / Cute dinosaur party stuff at Hobbycraft / Peanut M&Ms are my new addiction / The least Summery nail design possible... / Another first time outing for a cropped tee / Organising all of my jewellery stuff ready to move out into the garage next month / Noodles <3 / New necklace design that I have no idea what to name! Help?? / Summer is officially here / Waitrose roulade is also Low FODMAP friendly! / My Katniss braid from Saturday's post

Bonus photo this week as this morning I woke up to find this sight in Sawyer's house! Evidently he had managed to destroy a kitchen roll that was accidentally left on top of the cage. He's a rascal.... but a very cute one!

Also this week:
- As part of my slow revamping of my blog design I uploaded a new header! I really liked the photo from my Katniss Braid post and the colours seemed to fit in well with my blog so I went with it. What do you think?

- I joined Goodreads and set myself a reading challenge of 20 books in 2012! I know it isn't very many but it's almost June already and I've only read three so far (even if I have read them each twice!) I've got a 'to-read' pile in my room which currently consists of nine books but I'll still need eight more to reach my goal so if you have any recommendations please let me know!

- I am holding a giveaway to celebrate one year of my shop Sawyer & Scout! If you'd like to enter you can do so here. Thank you to everyone who has entered so far!

The Katniss Braid

The Katniss braid or Dutch braid has become a very popular style ever since Jennifer Lawrence was seen sporting it in The Hunger Games. Apparently the reason this style which wraps around the head diagonally was chosen for the character of Katniss is because she often carries a quiver and this style means she would still easily be able to draw arrows quickly. Luckily the look is actually really easy to recreate, even on yourself!
It is done in the same way as a basic French braid but instead of taking the strands over each other you take them under instead so the finished braid protrudes. You start from behind one ear and angle the braid around the head as you go following the nape of the neck. When you get to the other side you finish off with a normal side braid. It really is that simple!

This style works best on second day hair as when it is freshly washed it can be too soft and slippery to hold the braid. On the set of the film volume and curls were added to Jennifer's hair using the TopStyler before braiding. Instead I added some dry shampoo (Batiste Brunette) and a little hairspray (Umberto Giannini Rock n Roll Extreme) through my hair before I started, concentrating on the roots. This helped to add texture, make the strands easier to work with and also helped the finished braid stay in place. It can get a little fiddly if you have long/thick hair like I do especially when it comes to about two thirds of the way round but with a bit of practise it gets easier.

Hunger Games fan or not I think this is a great everyday look for Summer and will definitely be sporting it over the next few months!

Will you be trying the Katniss braid?

China Glaze Capitol Colours Collection: Part 2

china glaze capitol colours

china glaze capitol colours
Recently I posted about three colours I picked up from this collection (Agro, Smoke & Ashes and Luxe & Lush) and mentioned that there were originally six I had my eye on. As you can see about a week after writing that post I caved and placed an order for the other three. This time I chose Stone Cold (District 2), Fast Track (District 6) and Foie Gras (District 10).

china glaze capitol colours stone cold
Stone Cold is a charcoal grey based polish with tiny shimmering silver pieces and is the only matte/suede shade in the range. The dark grey tone perfectly represents District 2 known for Masonry. Being a matte polish it dries quickly so you have to be quite precise and speedy with application. It also doesn't last as well on the nails but to prevent chipping I've been wearing it with my regular topcoat (Sally Hansen Insta-Dri) and enjoying how it looks with a shiny finish. Having said all of that you can get away with just one coat of this which is pretty amazing. Additionally the colour really is beautiful so I'm glad I went back and ordered it.

china glaze capitol colours fast track
Fast Track looks like a simple nude shade from afar but up close it is packed with gold shimmer. I don't think this one fits in as well with it's District as the others as its only really the name that reflects the link to Transportation. Impressively despite being a light shade it is opaque in two coats. Generally I'm not that keen on nude polishes, I don't really like how they look against my fair skin tone so this was the one out of the six I wasn't so sure about. I do think it's very pretty though and I'm planning to wear it layered over other colours (as shown in a photo below & on the nail wheel above).

china glaze capitol colours foie gras
Foie Gras is difficult to describe, an unusual purple/brown/taupe shade with a classic creme finish. It represents District 10's trade of Livestock and the name is taken from a French liver dish. Unlike Fast Track this is the kind of neutral shade that appeals to me for everyday wear and I do think it's the most mature and work appropriate colour in the collection. The formula of Foie Gras is particularly lovely and looks smooth and shiny with just two coats.

Week In Photos 54

Illustration in Pride & Prejudice & Zombies / New addition to the shop / A small selection of the season finales I watched this week / Also watched a lot of the Lynn Hirschberg screen test series / Second group of polish purchases from the Capitol Colours collection, post coming on those tomorrow! / Solar powered bunny shaped light at IKEA / Gluten free pepper pizza / Watching Horrible Bosses... look out for that in next week's May Film Roundup / More food :) / The bunnies both enjoying some corn / Wearing one of my new designs / New floral duvet from IKEA / Gluten free chocolate and blueberry muffin

More gluten free baking practice, nail polish and playing with the bunnies this week but ultimately just like mid-May of the last few years, it was all about tv finales. Starting on Monday with the last ever episode of a show I've followed since the beginning; Desperate Housewives. I thought the double episode was full of completely cheesy moments but the only word I can find to describe the ending overall is satisfactory. Bones was just a bit ridiculous and How I Met Your Mother was predictable even to someone like me who doesn't usually watch it. Hart of Dixie's first season ended with lots of drama and lots of me getting annoyed with George. The tv week ended with the rather traumatic and LOST-esque Grey's finale. As I predicted my favourite character died and my favourite ship went down with that. That's enough geeking out from me but if you do happen to share any of my tv obsessions let me know in the comments what you thought of the finales!

Also this week:
- As you can see over there ----> I've started work on changing my blog design a little. It's probably going to take me a while to sort it all out and decide exactly how I want it to look but I'm quite happy with my new buttons!
- The lovely Alice was inspired by my latest nail post and created this great design!
- This month also marks one year (!) since I first set up a Big Cartel account and started Sawyer & Scout. To mark the occassion I've decided to hold a little giveaway/competition which I'm planning to post about one day this week so keep your eyes peeled for that!

Watercolour Nail Art

watercolour nails

When I saw the photos of the Lucian Matis Spring 2012 nails I knew I needed to try out the Watercolour design. The photo shows a little experimenting I did last week with different colours/brands. As you can see it works best with brights, particularly the red and blue combination. It looks really effective especially considering you don't need too many things to recreate this look; just your usual base and topcoats, a paintbrush, some acetone, a base colour and two or more colours for the actual design.
If you would like to create your own this tutorial video is very helpful!

Character Style Inspiration: Zoe Hart Part 5

Look one is actually one of the most appropriate workwear outfits we've seen on Zoe so far (no shorts!) and I really like it. The trousers in particular are a really flattering style and I was spoilt for choice when looking for a pair to recreate this look. The blouse Rachel wore was by Elizabeth & James and had long sleeves but this Topshop sleeveless version would be a great alternative for the Summer months. The tweed blazer Rachel wore is by IRO and is available at Free People. I decided not to look for a dupe of the Alexander Wang bag, I'm sure there are lots out there to be found though!

Rachel actually wore this second outfit with a Diane von Furstenberg jacket, not only was I not keen on the jacket but it wasn't exactly going to be easily to find a dupe for either! Because I opted to use this photograph which doesn't feature the jacket you also aren't able to see the shoes. Anyway, I still wanted to include them because I think they added a little bit of colour to the outfit and an additional texture next to the already contrasting blouse and leather skirt. This floaty top is really versatile and would look lovely with all sorts of outfits. To finish I wanted to add an accessory as you can see Rachel is wearing a watch in the photo, although the style and brand isn't clear, so I opted for this beautiful rose gold bangle watch from DKNY.

This super-casual outfit which still manages to look chic is easily replicated. The look centres around a pair of coloured skinny jeans and a striped t-shirt which are already both wardrobe staples for a lot of people. The striped scarf (this is the actual one Rachel wore!) against the striped top contrasts well and the unusual mix of colours works well too. Look three proves that even the most casual Zoe Hart outfit isn't complete without a pair of heels! I really liked the strap detailing on Rachel's wedged boots so I concentrated on that when looking for the shoes to finish this look and these USC boots seemed the perfect everyday heel.

When I saw this dress I fell in love with the colours, print, cut and zip detailing so I did a little research and found out that just like the red jacket its by IRO. Considering some of the top designer pieces Rachel has worn on the show it's actually quite reasonable at £186! The actual necklace worn was the Fin Necklace by Lulu Frost but this leafy design from Republic is a great high street budget alternative. Personally I would probably opt for a spiked collar necklace to add a slightly edgier feel. Look four is finished off with a large brown leather tote and I think this one from Nardelli is beautiful!

Which look is your favourite?

I'll be taking a break from the Zoe Hart style series while Hart of Dixie is on Summer hiatus. Luckily it was announced last week that the show will be returning for a full second series (yay!) so there will be lots more Zoe outfits to recreate and inspire come Autumn!

Sawyer & Scout Update: FREE UK P&P

There's been a big change over at Sawyer & Scout so I thought I would write up a quick post to let you all know what's going on. As of yesterday my shop now offers free postage on all UK orders and has a fixed rate of £2.50 P&P on international orders.

I'd been considering making this change for a while as lets be honest no one likes hidden charges at the checkout, do they? From the start I always wanted to keep the P&P rates as simple and reasonable as possible so for most items a standard £1 with 50p for additional items worked fine. However, it began to get complicated when it came to larger, heavier or fragile items that cost over £1 to post or package securely. So, with the price of stamps increasing and some new items requiring more substantial packaging than other items it seemed like an appropriate time to make the change. The free postage system should make things easier for everyone in the long run and ensure that your items still arrive with you safely and well-packaged.

Thank you for your continued support of Sawyer and Scout!

Topshop Nails: Zodiac

Topshop Zodiac0
Topshop Zodiac5
Topshop Zodiac1
Topshop Nail Polish in Zodiac £6.50 from the Sisters of the New Moon Collection

A few weeks ago I mentioned picking up this shade in a week in photos post and promised to review it when I got around to trying it out properly. Zodiac is described on the Topshop website as a black, in the bottle has a definite green glow and on the nails its actually quite silvery. I was hoping it would become one of my 'go-to' colours but unfortunately the colour that looked so perfect in the bottle doesn't transfer onto the nails. Zodiac is priced higher than the core collection polishes and personally I think the quality and formula isn't quite as good. Although it's still a pretty colour I'm disappointed with it overall and I don't think I'll be wearing it very often!

Have you tried anything from the Sisters of the New Moon collection?

China Glaze Capitol Colours Collection

capitol colours china glaze hunger games review swatch 5

Usually I don't buy into these themed nail polish collections (although I do still have my eye on Skull & Glossbones from OPI's Pirates collection!) but there were a few shades in China Glaze's Capitol Colours Collection that I had to get my hands on. The collection is inspired by The Hunger Games and is made up of twelve shades each corresponding to one of the Districts of Panem. I was tempted by half of the shades in the collection but eventually settled on three. The shades I picked up were Agro (District 11), Luxe & Lush (District 1) and Smoke & Ashes (District 12).
china glaze agro capitol hunger games review swatches

Agro is a shimmery khaki green shade symbolising 11, the agricultural district. I was a little worried that this one would turn out to be very similar to W7's Metallic Saturn which although is a beautiful colour I really don't like on me. Luckily Agro is in the same family but is also definitely much more toned down and darker which I prefer. I'm really impressed with how smoothly this polish applies and I think it would look great paired with a matte topcoat too.
luxe and lush china glaze hunger games review swatch

Luxe & Lush is a beautiful clear topcoat packed with plenty of unevenly sized flakies and is my frivolous purchase from the collection. The flakies shimmer blue, pink, green and gold, perfect to represent the district that makes luxury items! Compared to the other flakie topcoat in my collection, Look Beauty's Sequin Effect, Luxe & Lush is not as smooth on application but gives a much bolder, statement look. When these arrived I actually tested it out over the polish I was wearing, the already glitter-filled Gypsy Night by Topshop, and L&L certainly gave it lots of extra sparkle! This is a really versatile polish and although I wouldn't say it's necessary to have two flakie topcoats in your collection, I am looking forward to wearing Luxe & Lush over lots of different colours.

china glaze smoke and ashes hunger games swatch review

Smoke & Ashes is a black based polish with tiny pieces of glitter which sparkle beautifully between green and blue when they catch the light. For me this is the most interesting and most wearable of the three. Although I never wear, and don't own, a plain black polish I really love my black-based glitters and have never come across one with such pretty colours as this before. From afar it does look like a plain black but in the light it becomes something more special. I didn't realise just how lovely it would be until I got to see it up close as unfortunately it's difficult to capture on camera (I've tried my best!). Opaque in just one coat, I can definitely see Smoke & Ashes becoming one of my go-to colours whilst everyone else is wearing their Summer pastels!
