May Film Roundup: Buy, Pass or Rent?

Blue Valentine (2010)
Months and months ago I watched the trailer for this film and had been dying to see it. When it was only released in a small selection of cinemas I missed out and was rather disappointed so I swiftly placed a pre order for the DVD. The film wasn't quite what I thought it would be, of course I was expecting it to be intense, and it was, but it was so much more uncomfortable than I had anticipated. I have a lot of respect for how raw it is and for Michelle & Ryan's performances.  I'd class this as a film to be rented and not bought as I definitely won't be watching it often (it takes a while to recover haha). I would recommend it as one to see, but be warned, it's a tough watch.
Sunshine Cleaning (2008)
I rented this film on a whim and I'm so glad that I did. Sure, it's not the best film in the world but I found the concept original and interesting. I thought a lot of the sub-stories seemed rather rushed and were left unresolved, and it took me a while to cope with Emily Blunt having an American accent, but as a whole I actually quite enjoyed it. Rent away!
Rope (1948)
You may remember that I mentioned in one of my Week In Photos posts that I had purchased the Hitchcock box set and Rope is the first film I went for. The way it is filmed like a stage play makes it an interesting watch, there are a few particular scenes where I thought the camera angles were chosen so perfectly. Although I quite liked it, for most people I'd say its probably a pass, however if you are a fan of older films/Hitchcock then it's worth watching.
Rent (2005)
Thank you itunes for the wonder that is 99p rentals! This month wasn't the first time that I had seen Rent, I watched it several years ago and had been planning to watch it again for a little while. Second time round I didn't like it as much as I had from remembered the first time. There are a handful of musicals that I really like but I just don't find the songs in Rent to be that memorable or catchy. Having said that it is a pretty good film so it's also a rent.
Dan In Real Life (2007)
This film is one I never would have paid to watch, however when it popped up on iPlayer I decided to give it a chance. I've been trying to step out of my film comfort zone and give a wider range of films a chance which hasn't particularly paid off yet. Personally I really don't like these kind of comedies, I just don't find them very funny. I know a lot of people love them but I just can't understand it, I'm not completely miserable, honest! Even though I gave it a chance it's still a pass, it's just not for me.
Assault on Precinct 13 (1976)
I surprised myself with this one, recommended at my film studies class, when I saw it on iPlayer I thought why not?! It was a lot better than I was expecting, again I didn't think it was amazing and I won't be buying it anytime soon. I'm pretty sure I won't be watching the remake either (that does look awful). The repetition of the same piece of music throughout drove me crazy. It's like that feeling you get after watching Requiem for a Dream where that same song plays so much it's stuck in your head for weeks, except with this film the music was extremely irritating. Maybe that's just me?! It's another one which may appeal to some people but probably not the majority. Kill Bill Vol 1 (2003)
This is definitely one I can now cross of from the 'must-see' lists. I had seen parts of it before but had never actually sat and watched the whole thing. It's one of those must see films that I have been putting off because I didn't think I would like it at all.  Being a Tarantino film it naturally has a distinctive style, and obviously that's part of what it's famous for, but I found it distracting at times. Again I'm sitting on the fence and classing it as one to rent..... and I will be watching part 2 on BBC3 next weekend, it is a 'must see' after all! So far these posts seem to end up seeming rather negative...
As always your film recommendations are welcomed!
